Beginners • Re: Home control questions

My experiments with Pi WiFi show most of the Wifi working across the width of my house but not the length. Ethernet front to back and from one end out to the garage is good. You can then use a Pi 4 in each location as the local access point. Plus one of the Pi 4 boxes can have an extra antenna for connection to your mobile hotspot.

The wooden interior walls offer little resistance. Metal sided garages block WiFi. Bricks reduce the signal strength. Reinforced concrete, as used in an apartment I stayed in, are a wireless roadblock because of the metal. Placing the Cat 6 everywhere is good.

You might like to install a small battery somewhere. Image may be NSFW.

It can charge from the mains at cheap off peak rates. Wire the output mains voltage to the power sockets for each Pi and your refrigerator. Do the wiring that way even if you leave the battery purchase to later.

Put one of the Ethernet outlets next to your TV.
