Not a recommendation, as my recommendation would echo the official recommendation, but I will share personal experience for one Pi4B (of three). I had/have a 64 bit install, that and any number of factors may cause a different result. After getting a full sd image backup (using the graphical SD copy utility), I knew the recommended way to proceed, but having a backup and knowing full well the fallback plan (recommended method), I tested the instructions at https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/update-up ... -bookworm/
In my experience, this worked, though it was fairly time consuming That said, for my other pis (generally with less customization) I simply re-imaged an SD after backing up any files I wanted to transfer over.
