I wasn't so much "comparing things", but rather, asking for advice as to the best way to do things. Perhaps there is a better way, that I am unaware of?
Fundamentally you want something that works. Currently you have nothing, but you are on the right track. If you keep second-guessing yourself you will never try anything because you'll think there is still something better.
Once you have something working you can improve it if necessary. You can even throw it away and start again. But, at that point you'll have something concrete to compare to, so you can definitely say this is better (or it's worse, so you can go back to what you had).
