"Out of the box" you configure the network using NetworkManager.
Out of the box Network Manager will ignore any interfaces configured in /etc/network/interfaces[.d]

If you're not familiar with NM, nmtui is likely a better choice than nmcli.
I suspect the reason your ethernet connection is not working is that you have configured it to get an address via DHCP then told dhclient to ignore eth0.
