Troubleshooting • Re: Pi running very slowly

Pi is running using lxde. I use RealVNC to control it from my desktop. Any ideas what to check first?

"Pi is running using lxde"

Can you expand on that? What OS are you using as a basis?

Even if you have reasons NOT to do so in Production, have you tried running the supported RasPiOS Bookworm OS as a comparator for troubleshooting/diagnostics?

I guess that technically ANY remote access over a network connection MUST introduce at least some latency.

But my everyday use scenario is to enable the RasPiOS Bookworm built-in vnc server from raspi-config and access it over a cabled Ethernet LAN from an MS Windows 10 Desktop running the tigervnc client. This works so transparently it is indistiguishable from having a local screen and keyboard on the RPi board itself.

Is it interaction that is slow, or is the OS itself working too hard? What do basic monitoring tools like ps or top reveal? From what media is your RPi booting? A slow microSD card perhaps?
