Well. I had one other PiZeroW2, and it worked! The difference? The two Pis I had been using so far had the header pins mounted pointing downwards, so the TV hat was mounted "up" from underneath, so to speak. This last Pi had the more conventional arrangement with the header points pointing upwards.
The two alternative arrangements don't _feel_ that different to me, but I guess the pressures on the connecting pins must be different? Anyway, I have a working solution so I am quite happy now!
