Sounds like a weird sort of error. Magnetic disks have spare tracks they can rewrite too. Works for a while then the spare tracks run out. I usually replace them on the first error as surface coating errors spread quickly.

My experience of power outages. They kill file systems but not disks. Cheap Seagates are as good or bad as the other brands except Toshiba, which is disappearing from our shops, and the old Hitachi stuff before they sold to someone else. My fastest 2.5 inch disk is a ten year old CMR HGST.

Anything SMR is bad compared to CMR. There are lists of CMR disks. You now have to buy 3.5 inch.

Small light Pi NAS introduces a new reliability problem. Those ancient desktop towers were so heavy that a human bumping into them hurt the human. A Pi NAS is so light, the Pi NAS moves and hurts the magnetic disk. I look forward to large SSDs dropping in price so I can put my magnetic disks in the metal recycling bin.
