Is the OS up to date? There have been recent updates to Rasp Pi OS which were video related.
I wonder if it's RAM related. The Pi3 has twice as much RAM as the Zero 2
While it's running and playing a video in VLC; open a command line and type
df -h
and
free -h
What do you get?
Compare with the results on the Pi 3 with the setup that you are happy with.
