You can put your user's home directory on your NAS but doing so is not entirely trivial and won't work over SMB** or with a non-linux filesystem on the server.
That isn't exactly true, it is trivial, and will work over SMB with cifs-utils, but it is easier using Kerberos in an AD domain.

Well, yeah. But unless I'm mistaken by using SMB you'll lose the normal controls over owner, group, and permissions on the client side. Assuming the NAS filesystem has support for them that is. Which is what I was thinking about when I said "not entirely trivial".

I can't/won't comment on kerberos and AD domains as I've no admin experience of those.
