It is best to use different image name than kernel8 and configure which kernel you use in /boot/config.txt by using kernel property eg. in pi3 section. More details about config.txt filters https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... el-filters

Also do not forget about sudo make modules_install and copying overlay files to /boot partition. Modules for given kernel version need to be installed. Not sure if this is strictly needed to boot if you build kernel with the same name (never attempted such travesty) but definitely you should use modules for the given kernel build otherwise system might not work correctly.

More details about kernel build process in official raspberry documentation https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... ernel.html
Please see original post, many options are available so suit yourself. This worked for me at the time, note the modules are copied, you may have overlooked some of the lines in the quoted script.
